Overview

I spent two wonderful years living in Korea, enjoying Korean food to my heart’s content. When I moved back home, I found myself in serious Korean food withdrawal. With no Korean restaurants in my hometown, my only option was to search for recipes and learn to cook the dishes I loved. That’s how I discovered My Korean Kitchen, which quickly became my favourite recipe blog. While the recipes were delicious and easy to follow, I saw opportunities to improve the overall website experience.

This project involved redesigning My Korean Kitchen to create a smoother, more intuitive browsing and cooking experience. The main goals were to improve the recipe search functionality, prioritise access to the actual recipes, and ensure the blog worked seamlessly and maintained a clean aesthetic across devices.

Challenges

1. Confusing Recipe Filter
  • The original filter system was a static, non-contextual filter where conflicting options remain selectable. This allowed users to select any combination of filters, often resulting in no recipes being found.
2. Recipes Buried at the Bottom
  • Like many recipe blogs, the recipes were placed at the very end of the post, hidden behind long introductions and detailed explanations.
  • Users looking for the recipe itself had to scroll extensively, creating frustration and wasted time.

Solutions

1. Streamlined Filter Experience
  • Simplified filter logic to prevent “zero results” frustrations by changing the filter system to a faceted, dynamic filter preventing incompatible option selection.
2. Recipe-First Layout
  • Placed the recipe at the top of each post, giving users immediate access to ingredients and steps.
  • Supporting information (dish background, cooking tips, cultural context) was placed below for those who wanted to dive deeper.
